AMD situation has become gradually worse over the year and the most obvious reason is of course Intel’s launch of the Core architecture and its Core 2 Duo family. But how much damage has AMD suffered from Intel’s new processor family and what can we expect from the world’s second largest PC processor manufacturer? This is something Hexus has pondered about and now published an article about the subject where they take a look at the effects of Intel’s Core 2 Duo launch and perhaps even more important; Intel’s new Xeon family based on the quad-core Clovertown.
The upcoming future will according to Hexus focus on price cuts and here its 65nm technology will be very important thanks to its lower production costs and will make it easier for AMD to keep an attractive price. But if we look even further ahead the question is when AMD will launch its new architecture better known as K8L and Barcelona. The latest information states we can expect a launch of Barcelona in the middle of 2007. According to Hexus we might even see it during the first quarter of 2007, which will then be the market’s first “genuine” quad-core architecture.
There’s no doubt that AMD wants to get Barcelona ready as soon as possible and would it be able to launch it already during the first quarter of 2007 things are starting to look up.
“So although Intel is on top for now, AMD still has a few cards yet to play. These may not amount to the same kind of winning hand the company had for the last couple of years. But to say AMD is done for, and has failed to capitalise on the Athlon 64’s success, is simply short-sighted. The market moves in phases, and there are bigger gameplans than just having the fastest gaming chip around.”
