ATI launched its Stream Computing platform at the start of October, which is simply a concept of using the power of ATI’s graphics circuits for more than just 3D and video rendering. Today, it’s mainly the workstation market which is interested in Stream Computing and it now seems that AMD has decided to lift its own brand when marketing Stream Computing. AMD has namely relaunched ATI’s Stream Computing concept in a way where it has simply replaced ATI’s name with its own; AMD. This is no surprise as AMD wants to back up its own brand on the business market.
ATI’s Radeon graphics cards are called an “AMD Stream Processor” in AMD’s press release, which could cause some confusion. But it is simply a Radeon/FireGL graphics card with AMD branding.
“Using professional-grade technology derived from AMD’s Graphics Product Group, the AMD Stream Processor is a PCI Express-based add-in board designed with higher memory densities than any consumer graphics card – a full 1 GB of GDDR3 memory for stream computing applications. The processor also features HPC-optimized memory performance designed to best handle unique stream computing problem sets.”
This is most likely just the first step toward replacing ATI’s brand with AMD’s own, but as we’ve earlier reported ATI is not suppose to disappear entirely. Not within the near future at least, on the retail market ATI and the Radeon family will probably be around for some time.
