We’re mighty pleased with how AMD is moving forward with its Linux development. Documentation is being released at a steady rate and after being the biggest annoyance in the Linux world, ATI graphics cards are starting to become quite pleasant in Linux. Some time ago, AMD announced the 780G and 780V chipsets, the mainstream equivalents to the previously launched 790FX, but like most newly launched products there were only Linux drivers at the time.
Most of all, 780G impressed us with an integrated graphics circuit that performed very well and thanks to the Hybrid CrossFire support, you could gain as much as 70% performance. That is, if you’re running Windows. Linux was unsupported at the time. Catalyst 8.3 for Linux adds initial support for 780G.
Since the 780G graphics core is based on the RV610 core found with Radeon 2400 Pro, one would expect the two perform quite similarly. Luckily, the roundup posted over at Phoronix consists of 780G, Radeon HD 2400 Pro and Radeon HD 3650, and the results are just as expected.
