AMD has officially announced the new Phenom models sporting the new B3 stepping. All new models will bear the 9×50 naming scheme, with the exception of the tri-core models. The most interesting is of course that AMD has decided to up the frequency and launch two new high-end models, Phenom 9750 and 9850 Black Edition. These sport frequencies of 2.4 and 2.5GHz respectively. At the same time, all previous Phenom models will be phased out and replaced by new B3 models, as expected. Phenom 9600 Black Edition will also be phased out and replaced by the new 9850 Black Edition. This will be completed by the Phenom 9100e, a 65W quad-core operating at 1.8GHz.

While we’ve been hearing that the new stepping would not offer any further overclocking potential or such, AMD was pretty clear that the new B3 stepping would indeed prove to be better for enthusiasts. Although, it was sure to emphasize the importance of a high and stable 24/7 clock, instead of momentary overclocks.

When asked about the FX processor series, all AMD had to say that it would not arrive this quarter, but since roadmaps have hinted at Q2 launch we can only conclude that they are indeed coming, just no this quarter. And another thing, they are not for dual-socket platforms. AMD isn’t doing that anymore.

Along with the new quad-core models, AMD has also unveiled the world’s first tri-core processors. Phenom 8400 and 8600, operating at 2.1 and 2.3GHz respectively. These will mainly be available through OEMs and not reach the retail channel until later in Q2. Prices for these start at $150.

Faster models are expected further up ahead and as there is room in the naming scheme for both faster and slower tri and quad-core, we can only conclude that this is just the start for AMD.
