AMD’s current situation isn’t one that leads to cheers and cries of joy. Even if you don’t have to have the fastest processors around, which AMD doesn’t, to sell a lot, it’s pretty clear that this has affected AMD’s revenue. AMD posted its sixth consecutive loss recently, and Intel is making things as hard as it can for AMD. It has now announced that it will cut the prices of some of its quad-core processors with as much as 50%, which makes it even harder for AMD to stay in the black.
“The price of the Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz) fell 50 percent from $530 to $266, while the quad-core Xeon X3230 (2.66GHz) saw an identical cut: from $530 to $266.”
At the same time, Intel launched two new Core 2 Duo processors, E8300 operating at 2.83GHz with 6MB cache and E7200 operating at 2.53GHz with 3MB L2 cache. AMD is in a tight spot and we will just have to wait and see how they will tackle this.
