We’ve suspected that it would happen, that AMD would claim the performance crown on the graphics card market with its Radeon HD 4870 X2. Now that the new dual-GPU card has been launched it has been officially confirmed. Even if the card does have two RV770 chips, it’s still just one graphics cards and the games that now support CrossFire, which is basically all of the new ones, there is just no competition. NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce GTX 280 can’t keep up and sometimes it even beats two GeForce GTX 280 in SLI.
In these jousts we have two GPUs competing against each other, but considering Radeon HD 4870 X2 costs $550, a hundred or so more than one GeForce GTX 280, it doesn’t take a math genius to figure which card offers most bang for the buck.
Plenty of reviews of AMD’s new flagship product have been posted and some of them also show what a CrossFireX setup can do in both games how it will affect your electric bill. Two Radeon HD 4870 X2 adds up to four graphics processors and even few games are good at handling more than two GPUs, there are occasions where this extreme setup really pays off. If nothing else you can always boost that your PC drains 800W from the outlet(!).
Overall, AMD seems to have turned the tide through its venture with CrossFire and smaller, not so extremely complicated GPUs. We’re very eager to see what both AMD and NVIDIA have to offer the graphics card market in the near future and those of you who want more detailed information can check out the reviews below;
