Intel recently launched the Core i7 family that are the first Nehalem-based processors to reach the market. Unlike AMD that has always put the server market first, e.g. Shanghai, Intel started off with the desktop market. We will have to wait a bit longer for Intel to unleash its Nehalem architecture on the server mark, but it seems like Q1 is the time it will happen. Then Intel will launch both the Xeon 5500 and Xeon 3500 series based on the Nehalem architecture.

According to sources at server manufacturers, Intel will launch ten Xeon 5500 models whereof nine are quad-cores and the last is a dual-core CPU.

Model X5500 Frequency Price at 1kU
X5580 3.20GHz US$1,600
X5570 2.93GHz US$1,386
X5560 2.80GHz US$1,172
X5550 2.66GHz US$958
X5540 2.53GHz US$744
X5530 2.40GHz US$530
X5520 2.26GHz US$373
X5506 2.13GHz US$266
X5504 2.00GHz US$224
E5502 (dual) 2.00GHz US$188

The Xeon 3500 series includes three different models, all quad-cores. Unfortunately there are no certain information on the frequencies, but we have inserted presumed frequencies in the table below.

Model X3500 Frequency Price at 1kU
W3570 2.93GHz (?) US$999
W3540 2.53GHz (?) US$562
W3520 2.26GHz (?) US$284

AMD still have a couple of months to convince the market of the power of its Shanghai-based processors, but after that things will get a lot tougher as Intel will let loose its armada of Nehalem server processors.
