NVIDIA has been a thorn in the side for Intel after snatching Apple a while back. Intel’s chipsets has been working well with the exception of one thing; the 3D performance, where Intel’s integrated graphics circuits are quite mediocre. NVIDIA eventually managed to convince Apple to drop Intel in favor of NVIDIA and its GeForce 9400M chipset. NVIDIA has now shown public interest for the next “Intel market” and the market is none less (no pun intended) than the netbook market.
Intel and its Atom platform has been, more or less, the sole crusader of the netbook market and it is one of few computer markets that is expected to see continued growth over the next year, despite the economic depression.
In a recent web cast, NVIDIA said that it is keeping a close eye on the growing netbook market. Even if is still just watching, it sees that its solutions have something more to add to the market. A more efficient and power chipset is a qualified guess.
NVIDIA points out that the platform has some maturing left to do before NVIDIA will really consider its possibilities and by that we assume it is talking about better optimized performance but above all better displays, if nothing else higher resolutions. This would open up a niche for netbooks with more powerful graphics circuits.
