A few weeks before the official launch, benchmarks starring AMD first 45nm desktop processors are starting to appear around the web. We have seen how AMD’s coming processors overclocks well and can hit frequencies far higher any other previous processor from AMD. It’s not just about the frequency though, but how much work the processor can do during a given clock cycle, also known as IPC. Presentation slides from AMD has indicated that Phenom II would be slightly behind Intel at the same frequency.
OCWorkbench has published benchmarks with the new AMD Phenom II X4 940 (3.0GHz) and compared ti to an Intel Core i7 940 (2.93GHz) and Intel’s previous flagship, Core 2 Extreme QX9770 (3.2GHz).
AMD’s new 45nm processor is beaten in most tests and even if it is quite even, it still can’t quite reach up to Intel’s performance/cycle, especially in 3D rendering.
But Phenom II X4 940 keeps up fairly well, not the least if we consider the price as well. AMD will not be competing against the top model from Intel. They will stay in the mid-range segment with good performance at an affordable price, and it looks like Phenom II will fit very well there.
We look forward to some more thorough tests of the Phenom II architecture where there is more emphasize on price/performance and power consumption that is supposed to be one of the major strengths of the architecture.
