AMD will soon launch its first processor platform supporting the DDR3 memory technology. Intel launched its first DDR3 platform a long time ago and earlier it was believed that DDR3 would take over in 2009. That’s not going to happen but instead it looks like 2010 will be the year DDR2 will be phased out for real. The reason is quite simple and understandable, it is simply a matter of cost. DDR3 isn’t cheap enough and Intel’s latest Core i7 platform is far from the most common platform with its exclusive DDR3 support.
Byt the looks of it, Intel has gotten cold feet and decided to postpone the launch of the 5 series of chipsets. The Intel 5 series will only support DDR3 and Intel doesn’t think the market is quite ready for this transition yet.
According to DigiTimes Intel has postponed the launch of the 5 series to September. We’re almost certain that some won’t protest that much….
At the same time, it says that AMD is having problems with its integrated DDR3 memory controller for Phenom II that, if the information is correct, would indicate that Socket AM3 processors could be delayed. Consider all of this with a pinch of salt.
