So far Intel has only one chipset for its Core i7 platform and since X58 is designed for enthusiasts and more demanding consumers the motherboard prices are not the most appealing. Many are waiting for a cheaper Core i7 platform but as we recently reported the wait will be longer than many was hoping for. Intel’s 5 series chipsets are slated for the third quarter of 2009 and we now have some more concrete information on Intel’s coming chipsets.

The first new chipset of the coming 5 series, will be Intel P55 which will appear in the third quarter. The Ibex-Peak platform which the new 5 series is based on is intended for the mid-range segment and it looks like Intel will launch five chipsets for this segment; P57, Q57, H57, P55 and H55. Where all except P55 will launch in the first quarter of 2010.

Flexible Display Interface is one of the news with the Ibex Peak platform and it’s a new technology used to support the integrated graphics circuits some of Intel’s new Nehalem processors will sport. Lynnfield and Havendale will namely come with integrated graphics circuits as illustrated by the block diagram below;

Also worth mentioning is Intel’s new version of Turbo Memory which has been upgraded with Ibex Peak and is now called Braidwood. The three high-profile chipset will offer this technology that in this new design promises SSD-like performance for off-loading the primary harddrive. Among others thanks to an integrated NVRAM controller.

The processors and motherboards will use the new LGA-1160 socket, but as we said above we will have until the third quarter until we get a taste of Intel’s new Nehalem platform.
