Intel has revealed a pretty exciting detail on its 45nm transistors. The building blocks of Intel’s processors have evolved a lot since Intel introduced the first 4004 processor in 1971. According to Intel its 45nm transistors consumes 1/7000 of the power compared to the ones found in Intel 4004. The size difference is even bigger as today’s transistors occupy 1/40,000 of the surface of the 10µm transistors used 38 years ago.

The semiconductor has come a long way since Intel launched its first processors, only the future can reveal what the market will be like in another 40 years.

More information on Intel’s processor history can be found in the chip giant’s technology timeline (PDF).
