Small preview image

OCZ caused a bit of a riot when it showed its Solid State Drive-based storage solution Z-Drive. By connecting four separate SSDs to one external RAID controller attached to a PCI Express card it achieved read speeds over 700MB/s and almost as impressive write speeds over 500MB/s. When we saw the first benchmarks with Z-Drive there were few specifications available, but there were rumors of a price of only $1500 for 1TB, a bit too cheap?

French store Materiel has now listed Z-Drive in its assortment and we now know that it was way too cheap. The Z-Drive entry model with 250GB storage namely costs 1,399.99€, the 500GB model 2,199.99€ and the flagship at 1TB costs 3,399.99€.

Z-Drive has a new slimmer casing, but a small fan “sounds” a big discouraging

Z-Drive is just as expensive as it is unique. Even if we do appreciate a fast harddrive this feels a bit over the edge. Especially as the next generation SSDs with the SATA 6Gbps interface is just months away.
