What could be better than a Solid State Drive for raw storage performance? The is answer of course two or more Solid State Drives, and that is exactly what OCZ thought when it designed the Z-Drive. The unit is connected to a PCI Express slot and results in a storage solution with pretty impressive performance, read speeds over 500MB/s and write speeds over 400MB/s. OCZ hasn’t started shipping the Z-Drive yet even if it has made an official launch. Over at HotHardware they have acquired a design prototype of Z-Drive and torn it apart.

As expected they found four Solid State Drives from OCZ’s Vertex family with 128GB storage capacity each adds up to a total capacity of 512GB with one Z-Drive.

When OCZ eventually starts shipping Z-Drive to stores the design of the drive will have changed a bit and according to HotHardware there will also be some modifications to improve the already awesome performance.
