Intel has announced that it has finished the new firmware for its X25-M and X18-M SSDs. The new firmware can be used with both the first and second generation 50nm SSDs, and the new 34nm drives. The big news is of course that Intel has solved the problems where the drives could hang the system, even harm stored data, when you changed the BIOS password. When the bug was acknowledged Intel stopped sales of the new 34nm SSDs but it has now started shipping them again.

Those who already have one of Intel’s newest SSDs can head over to Intel’s website where they have published information on how to do a flash update, even though they emphasize you’re doing this at your own risk.

The firmware doesn’t bring any performance improvements or such, but still an important update for those that use the BIOS password settings.
