Intel is aiming high with the new mid-range platform. The Lynnfield processors and P55 Express chipset have proved to be a very capable platform with both Core i5 and Core i7 models covering the void behind the more expensive LGA1366/Bloomfield platform. Even if there is just one quarter left Intel hopes to sell more than 1 million processors with the new architecture this year already.
According to DigiTimes ASUS and Gigabyte will each ship 400,000 P55 motherboards this year, while other companies like MSI, ASRock and ECS will cover the remaining 200,000.
ASUS that sells the most motherboards will have shipped between 5.6-6 million motherboards in Q3, but nearly 30% of these are based on the very cheap Intel G31 chipset. In Q4 nearly 10 percent of ASUS’ motherboard shippings will be based on Intel P55 Express.
