When we discussed NVIDIA’s new Fermi architecture we though it was a pretty odd presentation most of all. Over the last few days discussions have made put NVIDIA and its product launch in a much worse light, as it turns out that the card was, as suspected not a genuine Fermi card. What made it all so much worse is that NVIDIA refused to admit faking the card and now that it has been more than covered in abnormalities it has stretched the initial statement to admitting that the card was just a demo product.
NVIDIA’s explanation for not showing a genuine Fermi graphics card, because there are working engineering samples, was purely cosmetic. The cards used to demonstrate the power of the Fermi architecture was a big mess of soldering points and cables that were not deemed not appropriate for a detailed photo session (but the fake one was??).
NVIDIA VP Jen-Hsung keeping a straight face at GPU Technology Conference
It’s understandable that there are no products ready for the runway with months to go before the actual launch of the new architecture. Instead of admitting to showing a non-functioning product sample it tried to fool the tech media and consumers, which has proved to be a big mistake.
The fact that it wasn’t even a very good attempt makes it an even harder slap in the face, and since NVIDIA’s Fermi announcement was more or less just an attempt to regain some trust and faith from partners and consumers we’re not so sure this was the best way to go.
How much damage this has done is hard to say, but there is certainly a few things to reconsider in the green camp.
The Fermi architecture is very much real though
