AMD har precis som Intel planer på att trycka in fler kärnor i sina serverprocessorer. Intel har nyligen visat upp en Nehalem-baserad Xeon-processor med åtta kärnor och nu har AMD gjort sitt drag. Man har gjort sin första officiella presentation av en sexkärnig Opteron-processor som går under namnet Istanbul. AMD tryckte in fyra stycken av dessa processorer i en rackserver och visade upp lite belastningstester med 24 fysiska kärnor i Windows Server 2008.

Istanbul är precis som nuvarande Shanghai en processor för Socket F-plattformen och med 45nm teknik samt 6MB L2-cache är det en enkel serveruppgradering för nuvarande Socket F-system. Det enda som ska behövas är stöd för delade strömkanaler och en BIOS-uppdatering.
To illustrate the performance difference between the two boxes, the AMD tech ran a Stream benchmark. The 16-core Shanghai system produced throughput numbers in the range of 25,000 MB/s. The 24-core Istanbul box, by contrast, hit about 42,000 MB/s. The tech then swapped the processor-and-memory daughtercards between the two boxes, and of course, the performance characteristics moved with them. – TechReport
AMD väntas släppa sina Istanbul processorer under andra halvåret av 2009 och man verkar redan kommit en bra bit på vägen efter deras senaste presentation.
