Rebranding graphics cards, and moving them up a new generation is something both AMD and NVIDIA do without embaressment. Now it is time for NVIDIA to promote three cards to the GeForce 600 series.

It was made clear that GeForce 610 and GT 620 would be OEM-only, while GT 620 may also appear in stores. GeForce 610 builds on GF119, which is Fermi at it worst with only 48 CUDA cores and 64-bit memory bus. GF108 used in GeForce GT 620 has twice the equipment, but the number of ROP units remain at 4.

NVIDIA will also relaunch GeForce GT 630. This is the same card as the old GT 440 and is largely identical to GeForce GT 620, but clocked slightly higher. NVIDIA’s GF119 and GF108 will fill the lower segments, while GT 640 is expected to use the new GK107 circuit that is already being used in the mobile GT 640M.

AMD earlier renamed its HD 6400, HD 6500 and HD 6600 to HD 7400, HD 7500 and HD 7600. Also AMD has said these will be OEM-exclusive, but we would not be surprised if they appear in stores as well.

The reason none of the companies wants to offer something new in the lowest segment is because of AMD and Intel. Intel is expected to bring big graphics improvements with its Ivy Bridge processors, while AMD Trinity should lift integrated graphics performance to a whole new level. It therefore makes a lot of sense for the companies to reuse old chips in these segments. If you are hunting for something new and cheap you need to really look at what you are buying, you might be getting something very old in a new packaging.

At least Nvidia when they rename the older cards are moved farther down the line to the bottom.
