Blizzard does not only have their big upcoming title Diablo III on the way, but also the first StarCraft 2 expansion which should be released later this year. What they have in common is that they should get the much anticipated Global Play, but also several other functions that fans have requested.

Global Play means that you are no longer limited to play only within your own region (USA, Europe, Asia etc.), but these limitations is being lifted – something which has been wanted for a long time from Blizzard.

Diablo III will get exactly this, but not without restrictions. To be able to play on the region free server it is not possible to import characters from other regions, also to auction out and buy items for real money will no longer be possible. The latter is due to the laws for this kind of transactions variating from one region to another, but it should also make sure that the game economy from different regions don’t affect eachother. So if you want to be able to buy items with real money, it will only work with characters within your home region.

Also StarCraft 2 will be getting Global Play in connection to, or around the launch of the upcoming expansion Heart of the Swarm later this year. Since StarCraft 2 has no support for LAN it has made it harder for those with poor internet connection or if the net simply is cut off, since multiplayer matches has been forced to start from the beginning. It will now be possible to continue multiplayer matches, which at least should ease the problems that the lack of LAN means today.
