More and more is pointing toward a changing PC market. Computer makers are trying to keep up with the development, but also Intel is starting to feel the consequences and is inviting computer builders to discuss Haswell, which it hopes will change the tide.

AMD and Intel are often synonymous to “processors”, but both are starting sense the changes that are happening. AMD’s revenue was down from last year, but still made profit. Intel’s revenue was up by 3 to 5 percent, which is poor result considering it is usually just below 10 percent annual growth.

Exactly how much ARM together with Windows 8 will affect the x86 actors is still very uncertain, but it is clear that both AMD and Intel are trying to catch up and adjust to a market that has been very linear and predictable up until now. Intel is putting its faith in the coming architecture Haswell. The architecture will get an integrated southbridge in its slimmest format, and Intel hopes to achieve new levels of energy efficiency when idle, on par with ARM system processors.

The goal with Haswell is to eliminate the borders between the traditional computer and other types of units that are eating into the PC segment. Hopefully it will resurrect the PC market, but also hinder the entry of up-and-comer ARM into the PC sphere that has been dedicated to x86 in the past. According to sources to Digitimes Intel is inviting six OEMS to discuss Haswell, where HP, Lenovo, Dell and Acer are mentioned by name.

The launch of Haswell will happen in April next year, but this could be a “Launch Window” that may change in the future, so any specifics regarding the launch should still be considered with a pinch of salt.

Intel try to keep ARM from taking the PC space 😀 . Much lower idle power usage on intel haswell that’s great but power at full load is important well. Oh and Intel doesn’t just have to worry about ARM. They also have MIPS to worry about.

Considering AMD couldn’t beat Intel since 2006 / Core 2 Duo days, ARM and MIPs have no chance whatsoever of even hoping to compete with Intel in the PC space. Where they do have a chance is tablet and smartphone markets. Similarly Intel is facing the same problem since it has an uphill battle to climb to make a very good tablet/smarphone CPU. The main difference is that Intel has the world’s best engineers + class leading manufacturing facilities, a combination no one in the world can match. As long as Intel’s engineers don’t make major mistakes such as with… Läs hela »

Wow, Qualcomm is KILLING Intel in phones and without bribery and threats ADM woudl be even farther ahead. Even now Intel won’t WHISPER FMAC. AMD has it Intel doesn’t.

SHEEP!!!
