Microsoft and Intel earlier announced their support for HD DVD as the next generation optical format. Even if we can imagine several reasons for Microsoft to pick HD DVD, only the fact that Sony is behind Blu-ray is probably enough, there might be bigger things behind the decision. HD DVD is simply the best format for Microsoft and Intel if you take a closer look at how the two companies plan on using it. At Ars Technica they’ve written an article on precisely that and why it thinks that Microsoft picked HD DVD.
