ATI och NVIDIA has really been focusing on adding more multimedia features lately, also for its regular product series. The coming optical formats Blu-ray and HD DVD are a very important part of this but what format that will finally become the standard is something that neither ATI nor NVIDIA care about. The reason is that both use H.264 compression to store its video signals, which simply means that ATI and NVIDIA simply focus on the H.264 codec. ATI recently released support for hardware accelerated H.264 decoding through its Catalyst 5.13 drivers for the X1000 family and NVIDIA is working on a similar support with its Pure Video circuit. In other words there is nothing to worry about when ATI and NVIDIA state that they don’t care what format that wins, the support will be there anyway.
