We have already seen reports about Intel’s aggressive prices with NetBurst-based processors and 2006 will be a lean year at Intel for the current generation of processors. Intel is expected to make even further price cuts for the entire Pentium D series on July 23, the same day it launches Conroe, at 40-60%. To make sure the consumers doesn’t leave AMD when Intel lowers (read butchers) its prices AMD has now announced that it is also planning a massive price reduction for its Athlon 64 X2-based processors. On July 24, the day after Intel’s price cuts, AMD is expected to lower the prices of its Athlon 64 X2 with 35-50%.

At the same time it will lower the Athlon 64 prices with about 20-30% to counter the Pentium D series. Also the budget series Sempron is expected to become cheaper. AMD hasn’t got much of a choice than to follow Intel’s big price cuts it it wants to stay competitive while this could have negiative effects in the long run instead.
