We’ve earlier received indications for that ATI and NVIDIA’s next generation graphics card flagships may require a whole new level of power even though today’s model that are already considered high consuming. According to an article published at PC Watch it seems like NVIDIA’s G80 graphics circuit will require up to 175W when it is made with 90nm technology, a bit lower with 80nm technology. You can compare this to the 147W, which the Dual-GPU card GeForce 7950GX2 is specified at today. ATI’s new flagship, R600, which will be the first graphics card on the market with a unified shader architecture is still the worst. R600 is expected to consume about 200W with its 80nm technology and a bit less if ATI manages to get its 65nm manufacturing process working.
In other words it seems graphics cards will be replace the processors’ role as power hungry monsters, now we’re just waiting for the trend to go the other way with ATI and NVIDIA as well. Because if this continues the graphics card market is literally going to burn.
