AMD is preparing an update for Radeon HD 7950, which is similar to the treatment it gave HD 7970 to create HD 7970 GHz Edition. The higher frequencies promises up to 15 percent better performance and a BIOS update AMD has sent to reviewers has leaked.
Before the launch of Geforce GTX 660 Ti, AMD has decided to update its HD 7950 with higher clock frequencies. Besides a boost from 800 to 850 MHz, the graphics card has been given a Turbo Boost function that allows for clock frequencies up to 925 MHz. The memory frequency is still the same at 1250 MHz (5000 MHz effectively).
The boost in frequency will result in a theoretic boost of 15 percent. AMD has already sent out a new BIOS to the media, which will update HD 7950 with the new frequencies, and it has leaked and is available at TechPowerUp. All HD 7950 that is shipped from the middle of August will have the new BIOS and the older version will be phased out.
To most users just overclocking HD 7950 to the new levels will result in the same performance boost. If you update to the new BIOS you do so on your own risk. We take no responsibility for any possible damage that might occur.
