While most people are waiting for HD 7990, sporting two Tahiti XT2, ASUS has a graphics card sporting two Pitcairn/HD 7870 GHz Edition in development. The reason is to fill the price void that has appeared in the upper performance segment.

Update 11:07 – NordicHardware has received a reply from ASUS saysing the rumor isn’t true. ASUS ARES III with two HD 7870 is not in the works.

During Computex ASUS presented the ROG MARS III with specifications like GeForce GTX 690, but clock frequencies on the level with GTX 680 – where each GK104 GPU had access to 4 GB GDDR5 memory each. MARS III is not surprisingly expected to be more expensive than a regular GTX 690, which currently costs around 1000 euro.

First generation ARES using two Radeon HD 5870 GPUs

A new source claims that ASUS is also working on ARES III, but it will not use two Tahiti XT2 that is also found in HD 7970 GHz Edition, since ASUS does not want to compete with its own Mars III. Instead it uese two Pitcairn XT that is also found in HD 7870 GHz Edition to fill a price void. Currently GTX 680 costs around 500 ero and the next step is GTX 690 at 1000 euro, which means there is a lot of room for a card like this from ASUS.

The new card will equip each graphics circuit with 2 GB GDDR5 memory and both graphics circuits will be fully activated – hence the name Pitcairn XT. The card will get two 8-pins PCI Express connectors for power, which will allow the card to draw up to 375W, but the actual power usage should be around 300W.

ASUS ARES III should be priced between HD 7970 GHz Edition, GTX 680 and GTX 690, which is reasonable since the performance should be in the same region. There were no mentions of frequencies and the same goes for the launch date, if the source is true.
