When Intel launched its Core i7 platform it was the first time ever that ATI and NVIDIA both supported a platform with its multi-GPU setups. This means that you can compare the two graphics card manufacturers solutions head to head. Something they have over at X-bit Labs. They took a Core i7 platform and thrown in two Radeon HD 4870 graphics cards in a CrossFireX setup and compared them to the equivalent GeForce GTX 260 SLI.

As expected the two have their strong and their weak games, but when it comes to compatibility it actually seems like ATI’s CrossFireX has a slight advantage, contrary to popular belief. The differences are small overall, where SLI has the advantage elsewhere.

It is nice to see that both AMD and NVIDIA has come a long way with their multi-GPU solutions, where they at several occasions are close to and sometime above 90% performance scaling, even if it is often much less.
