Even if AMD is trumping Intel in the frequency department when the exotic sub-zero cooling is brought out. AMD recently launched the Phenom II X4 955 CPU that turned out to be a really nice overclocker that does 4GHz on air cooling. Intel’s new Core i7 Extreme 975 processor sports the all new D0 stepping, which looks to be something truly extreme in terms of overclocking.
The processor operates at 3.33GHz normally, I.e. 133MHz faster than Phenom II X4 955. A couple of people have posted previews of the coming flagship, among others X-bit Labs that achieved 4.15GHz on air with mild voltages. The processor has now found its way into the hands of some truly skilled overclockers and then the results are truly impressive.
Overclockers PcCI2iminal and Yoko have published some overclocking results with the processor where they set anew overclocking record for Core i7 on air cooling. The processor was pushed to quite amazing 5015MHz with a Thermalright Ultra 120 air cooler. The voltage was north of 1.5V and at 1.52V they managed to complete 1M SuperPi at 4750MHz. All with regular air cooling and an ambient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
Below is the system used;
- Processor – Core i7 975 ES
- Motherboard – Biostar Tpower (0406)
- Cooler – Thermalright Ultra 120 RT
- Fan – San Ace 102CFM
- RAM – Dominator 1866
- VGA – HD4890
- SSD – Transcend 32GB
- PSU – Giga-EZ 1000W
Far from everyone will be able to overclock Intel’s new D0 processor, but there certainly seems to be a lot of fun coming with Intel’s optimized core.
