Small preview imageGoogle is the world’s most frequently used search engine, but there is more than just the search engine that the company Google is doing: software development, own solutions and services and a whole bunch of other offerings in various forms and shapes. One of the coming plans is apparently to create a database with genetic information. Something that has stirred up a few emotions with people that are accusing Google of being the biggest threat against our personal, genetic privacy of today. An intrusion beyond the mind to some. Our genetic inheritance is unique, except for some people, and there isn’t really anything that is as holy as our own genes.

“Biopiracy refers to the “monopolization of genetic resources” according to the show’s organizers. It is also defined as the unauthorized use of biological resources by organizations such as corporations, universities and governments.”

The accusing side claims that Google’s database would lead to improper use of the genetic information, our very most private such. I can nothing but agree that such a database would be a tremendous intrusion on our privacy. No one has the right to collect your or my genes without our approval. The thought behind this would be to presonalize medications, but why you would need to make it a public database is beyond me.

With today’s industry gene research being an important part of our future development so if there is anything we should fear it’s the public use of our genetic inheritage. I should point out that Google has chosen not to comment all this and other people involved has either done the same or denied the whole thing. These are so far just accusations, but strong such that Google hasn’t denied despite a chance to.
