Intel turned the Solid State Drive market upside down when it launched its first units in 2008. The performance of its SSDs was very impressive, especially as they used the slower MLC technology. The big problem with Intel’s SSDs was that the price was considerably higher than the competition, even if the performance was reflected in that. Intel showed that it was possible to build really fast SSDs, despite the poor support from today’s operating systems.

Intel knows its stuff and therefor it becomes extra interesting to hear what the processor manufacturer has to say about the Solid State Drive technology and its future. Over at HardOCP they’ve had a chat with one of the company engineers that has taken it upon himself to answer questions from the HardOCP readers.

There is plenty of useful information among others about the rumor that the performance of an SSD drops as it fills up, something that really is an operating system deficiency. And that there aren’t any file systems for Solid State Drives, but that SSDs are still so fast that they can deliver competitive performance.

Some very interesting reading for those who are interested in Solid State Drives. The entire interview can be found over at HardOCP.com.
