Earlier today we reported about how Ion, according to NVIDIA, would be as power efficient as Intel’s competing circuit 945GSE, while delivering much better performance. We are all waiting for this chip to be mass produced and it now looks like we are a great deal closer to seeing this renowned chipset in a complete product. The Ion platform has received the famous ”seal of approval” from Microsoft, which affects the platform in several ways.
First of all, Microsoft has given its blessing and that it will be able to power Windows Vista. Something we expected, but still important to have on paper. Most likely it will also be capable of running Windows 7, which at the moment seems like the OS most are waiting for. The second great advantage is that the Ion drivers will be certified by Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL).
Even if this approval is no way a deal breaker it adds a certain security and reliability to the final product, which is good for everyone involved. At the same time, Acer has told laptopmag.com that it as the first company can confirm an interest in NVIDIA’s Ion platform. We believe that there are more companies looking to make products based on Ion now that Microsoft has give its consent. It should just be a matter of time before we get small portables fully capable of playing Full HD media, games and yet decent battery time.
