When NVIDIA launched the GTX series graphics cards it had chosen a quite different path than the competitor AMD. It had chosen to continue with a monolithic design with tons of transistors and great performance. The tactic didn’t quite pan through though as AMD launched a set of graphics cards that really hit the sweetspot in terms of price/performance. It also launched a graphics card with dual RV770 circuits, Radeon HD 4870 X2, that matched NVIDIA’s high-end card.

NVIDIA has also launched graphics cards with dual graphics circuits and the last to arrive was GeForce 9800GX2, which used a so-called ”sandwich” design where the two circuits where facing each other.

When the GTX series beefy chips is shrunk to 55nm next year it is time for NVIDIA to launch its new graphics card sandwich and the card is said to be called GeForce GTX 295. It uses two 55nm GT200 GPUs and is expected to go public at CES in early January. At VR-Zone they’ve posted a picture of the card. How it will perform and what it will cost isn’t mentioned, but we’re guessing NVIDIA is aiming above Radeon HD 4870 X2 in both cases.
