NVIDIA Ion squashes Intel’s 945GSE chipset when it comes to graphical performance. Intel’s integrated graphics circuit GMA950 is several years old and compared to the fresh GeForce 9400M graphics circuits of the Ion platform it’s not even fair to put them in the same category. NVIDIA claims that Ion offers up to 10 times the performance of 945GSE in games and video playback, which has also been proved. Even the differences aren’t always that great, it’s still a total humiliation.

The questions that are still around are about the power consumption of the Ion platform that according to impartial tests are considerably higher than the Intel platform. Something NVIDIA denies;

“When Drew Henry was asked at today’s press conference about the battery life and performance of the ION platform he said that the battery life should be as good as it is on the current crop of Intel chipset based netbooks, but with ten times the performance.”

NVIDIA has earlier showed that the Ion test platforms don’t have all power saving features enabled, which could explain the higher power consumption. If it can keep word and really reduce the power consumption to the same level as Intel 945GSE it is certainly even more impressive. At the same time it says that Ion is still five times faster than Intel’s new GN40 chipset.
