Larger OLED monitors are still hard to produce, which has resulted in the high prices we have today. In an attempt to turn the tide Sony and Panasonic have announced a joint venture for development and mass production of OLED panels, for e.g. TVs.
Earlier this year Sony announced it would abandon OLED for mass markets and instead focus on the alternative Crystal LED. Now it seems the company has turned around, which fits well with the recent appointment of Kazuo Hirai as the new VP. Sony and Panasonic have started a joint venture where they will develop OLED panels based on technology from both companies, which in the end would result in lower production costs.

Even though the venture was just made official, the companies expect to have mass production ready next year. Both Sony and Panasonic are going through big structural changes where Sony will axe 10,000 employees and Panasonic will cut its work force in half at the head quarter from 7,000 to only 3,500 employees. If Sony does not manage to bring its TV division from the red back into black it will have lost money for 10 straight years. We can only wait and see if this OLED venture is the right way to go, but it is always interesting when two giants decides to team up and make the best of a bad situation.
