Last year details on a joint venture between Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi and INC (Innovation Network Corporation) that is financed by the Japanese government leaked to the press. Today the venture has been officially announced, called Japan Display.

INC is a Japan-based investment company, with the goal of supporting technology and innovation within Japan, and now a major venture is starting. Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi have joined together with INC to make LCD screens for smaller devices like smartphones and tablets, but also other kinds of products that use screens of the same sizes, for example in the automotive industry.

The three Japan-based companies have invested 10 percent each in the new company called Japan Display, while INC supplies the remaining 70 percent. The new organization will be divided into seven divisions; Research and Development Division, Mobile Business Division, Automotive/C&I Business Division, Sales Division, Production Division, Procurement Division, Quality Assurance Division, Internal Audit Room and Central Staff.

The organisation will according to the VP Shuichi Otsuka have closely trimmed hierarchy, which means the number of directors will be kept at a minimum. Besides himself, there are nine division managers. The venture will focus on mainly smaller screen types, and will not include larger displays like computer monitors or TVs.
