NVIDIA has one of the most powerful SoC solutions through the Tegra platform where it has paired an ARM11 processor with in-house graphics technology. Tegra has made many appearances and often performed live 1080p video playback. Microsoft uses Tegra with its new media player Zune HD, which offers 720p playback in a very small and slim format. Information on the next generation Tegra chip has surfaced and it claims up to four times the performance.

Exactly how NVIDIA measures performance wasn’t revealed, but it’s certainly bold to claim such an increase without any increase in power consumption and we are eagerly awaiting solid proof.

We’re most likely dealing with a dual-core ARM Cortex processor and a significantly faster graphics system, most likely based on the GeForce 9 architecture, as today’s Tegra platform use GeForce 6 technology.

Specifically the GPU is very important with Tegra since NVIDIA use it for far more than just drawing pixels in videos and games. The power of the graphics circuit is used from powering everything from the user interface to flash material.

Tegra2 is expected to show in February 2010 and then use energy efficient 40nm technology. We can’t wait to see this chip in action, inside both portable media players and mobile phones.
