NVIDIA will be no worse than AMD with its generation if DirectX 11 graphics circuits. AMD will be first out, if nothing entirely unexpected happens, and it has five different categories of chips coming. If we are to believe the latest rumors surrounding NVIDIA’s next generation chip, code-named GT300, NVIDIA will be meeting up with AMD in all categories. NVIDIA namely has five flavors of GT300 in the planning stage where GT300 is the top of the line, and the remaining four will fill the void from the very low entry level up to the performance segment.

At SemiAccurate they have published information that once again states that GT300 is HUGE, and it is. The die measures 23mm x 23mm (529mm^2), which is larger than already beefy GT200b circuits of the GeForce GTX family; 470mm^2. But don’t forget that GT300 is made with much more narrow copper lanes, 40nm vs. 55nm.

The size of the circuit and the higher costs of the 40nm node would make GT300 about 1.42 times more expensive than GT200, the source says. And then we have the worse yields of the 40nm technology to add to the equation. In other words, GT300 should be mighty expensive when it arrives.

NVIDIA is still sticking to a 2009 launch, but if it does launch this year we’re wondering what kind of launch we’re looking at. Paper or hardware? Most likely the former. All this granted, nothing is entirely certain when it comes to AMD and NVIDIA and their race for DirectX 11.
