Playing video on a TV from a phone is anything but a pain-free experience today, especially with the current MHL standard that can run into compatibility problems between devices. VESA has therefore developed Mobility DisplayPort – a standard that is backed by the 180 members.

Mobility DisplayPort, in short MyDP, is intended to become the new standard for playing everything from music, to movies and stereoscopic 3D material on an external monitor. MyDP is a smaller version of DisplayPort that connects to an external monitor either through DisplayPort or HDMI.

The cable is passive and can play movices at Full HD (1920 x 1080), 24-bit colors and 60 Hz update frequency. The standard also supports other devices like mouse, keyboard and remotes that are used for the monitor. The MyDP cable will also work for charging the devices, while it is connected to the monitor. Unfortunately there are not pictures or measurements of the new interface, which means we can’t compare it to current standards physically.

VESA expects the standard to be used in next generation smartphones, tablets and ultrabooks. We can definitely see how a standard like this has room among all these units, not the least smartphones and tablets where it is not unusual for companies to rely on proprietary technology. But also ultrabooks are limited by the number of connections and in the hunt for thinner devices, a standard like this fits well in with the crowd.
