Most PC makers tend to install a bunch of “value added programs” that make them stand out and offer more features. The problem with “crapware”, as most calls it, is that it consumes system resources and it has now been confirmed that Windows 7, which has been praised for its fast boots and low system requirements, is ruined by many PC builders and their junkware.
At PCPro they’ve tested a whole bunch of new notebooks where they focus on the effect of these crapware programs. Acer and Sony were the worst sinners where Acer transformed 43 second boot time to 2 minutes and 44 seconds through its “useful software”.
These programs often consumes hundreds of MegaBytes of RAM and Acer need no less than 2.4GB extra harddrive space to fit all of its junkware.
Over the course of this feature, we’ve uncovered two important facts: first, no big-brand laptop (aside from Apple) is free from crapware, but it’s possible to buy a machine that’s noticeably faster and less cluttered than many of its competitors.
Luckily not everyone was as bad as Acer, but very few of the programs that were installed was close to decent and sometimes terribly hard to remove, which is really puzzling.
