AMD’s next graphics circuit for the mid range segment, RV740, has been known for some time and the first 40nm GPU from the company should be an important test before the coming high-end cards. It’s been a bit uncertain when RV740 would appear due to rumors of delays and issues, but it now looks like the Radeon HD 4600 series will arrive in April, Fuad is saying the same thing. This means that AMD and NVIDIA will both be moving on to the next generation process in the same month.
Earlier on AMD and ATI has had a slight advantage when it comes to moving to new processes, but since the latest information on the GT218 GPU from NVIDIA indicates that this one will also be 40nm but most importantly will launch in April as well. The launch date of the other GT2xx chips and AMD’s RV790 remains clouded.
Whether NVIDIA, or even AMD, can stick to this launch schedule is impossible to say, but we can look forward to a real interesting race in the second quarter.
