AMD recently announced its first 45nm processors in the form of the server processor dubbed Shanghai. Even if AMD has made much fuss regarding the specific models yet, new models are appearing in stores all the time. The first real benchmarks have now been posted and even if the original source remains anonymous they do look authentic and the poster is credible. AMD actually looks to have a base for its previous claims of performance improvements, especially when it comes to database handling and MySQL.

Even if the differences aren’t revolutionary they are clearly noticeable, which is quite impressive since this is not really a new architecture but mainly a die-shrink, although an heavily optimized one. The power consumption measurements look good, which we presume most companies will be very pleased to hear.

The IPC (Instruction Per Cycle) may not have increased by that much, though consistently higher, but the performance/watt ratio is substantially higher. We will await a more in-depth analysis of Shanghai before passing any kind of judgment, but we really AMD s about to get a break and get back in the game against Intel.

On the other hand, Intel’s Core i7-based server processors are still missing in action and the Nehalem architecture is supposed to really shine in server environments…

A summarize of the Shanghai benchmarks can be found over at XtremeSystems forum.
