AMD has a tendency of code-naming its processor cores after cities. This will apparently change after that it has launched its first 65nm processors based on the Brisbane and Windsor FX cores, the latter for its 4×4 platform. AMD will, after these models, move on to using names of stars in our solar system and the first models of AMD’s star family will, according to DailyTech, be called Agena FX, Kuma, Rana and Spica. From what it seems, the star family is the architecture earlier known as K8L and it will introduce support for both HyperTransport 3.0 and DDR2-1066.
“Beginning in Q3’2007 AMD is expected to release its first Stars quad-core processors. The new quad-core processors are based on AMD’s Agena and Agena FX cores. Targeting AMD’s 4×4 platform is the Agena FX core. Agena FX will only be available on Socket 1207+ and offer dual processor functionality. The vanilla Agena core will be available on single processor socket AM2+ platforms.”
