AMD is currently in a bit of a jam. It launched the new series of quad-core desktop processors, Phenom II X4, which with its 45nm technology would attract mainstream customers to AMD’s platforms. The flagship, Phenom II X4 940, got a price tag of around $280 and was competing from a price/performance angle with Intel’s new processors. But as expected, Intel retorted by cutting prices of its quad-core processors, Core 2 Quad.
Intel lowered prices with 16% to 40% which suddenly made AMD’s Phenom II X4 processors not so very competitive anymore since the performance and price ratio spot was not as sweet anymore.
AMD has replied with a price cut of its own, only 12 days after the official launch of the platform. The prices of the two Phenom II X4 has been lowered by around 17% and stores have already adjusted to the new price level.
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition can now be for as little as $250, even cheaper in some cases, while Phenom II X4 920 can be found at around the $200 mark. Together with cheap DDR2 memory and affordable Socket AM2+ motherboards they are still an attractive platform.
Whether this will be the end of the price war between AMD and Intel ends remains to be seen.
