AMD has without any official statement released two new processor models in its Athlon 64 X2 series for Socket AM2. The two new processor models are called Athlon 64 X2 5400+ and Athlon 64 X2 5600+. Both models work at 2.8GHz but their L2 caches are varying. The 5400+ model comes with 512KB L2 cache per core, a total of 1MB L2 cache. The new flagship 5600+ has in turn been equipped with 1MB per core for a total of 2MB L2 cache. This means that Athlon 64 X2 5600+ has identical specifications as Athlon 64 FX-62, the only thing separating the two is the FX processor’s unlocked multiplier.
The prices of the new processors will be 485 USD and 505 USD in quantities of 1000 units. This can be compared to the price of Athlon 64 FX-62 which is 713 USD. Whether they are using AMD’s new 65nm core or if it’s still the 90nm technology is uncertain, but it seems that this is the last top models at 90nm.
