AMD has now officially launched its first 65nm processors. The first to arrive are AMD’s Energy Efficient models of Athlon 64 X2 which with its dual cores will have a significantly lower power consumption thanks to the new and more efficient manufacturing process. The new models of Athlon 64 X2 uses 1MB L2 cache (2x512KB) and will initially be launched at four different speeds; 2.1GHz (4000+), 2.3GHz (4400+), 2.5GHz (4800+) and 2.6GHz (5000+). The TDP is at 65W and is up to par with the earlier EE processors AMD launched based on 90nm technology. But the difference should be that it can manufacture considerably more processors with this optimized power consumption.

AMD doesn’t mention any details about the availability of the new processors but the main portion of AMD’s system builder partners doesn’t seem to have the new 65nm processors in stock until the first quarter of 2007. The prices of the new processors will be between 169 USD for the entry model up to 301 USD for the top model. At orders of a 1000 units though. Retail prices will have to wait, but will most likely be something similar.

“AMD processors built with 65nm line-widths are designed to deliver exceptional performance when running multiple applications, as well as enable small form factor PCs that complement both home and office environments. By mid-2007, AMD expects to be fully converted to 65nm production at Fab 36.”
