AMD has always been sloping behind Intel in terms of moving on to new manufacturing process nodes. Intel reached 45nm long before AMD and the coming 32nm generation will not be very different. Intel is expected to launch its 32nm Westmere architecture in the fourth quarter 2009 and previous roadmaps pointed to that AMD would not release its first 32nm processor until 2011. Now it seems like AMD has shifted gears and is speeding up the development of its next generation of processors coming of the 32nm node.

According to this new information the first 32nm processor from AMD should appear in the middle of 2010, and be mass produced in the fourth quarter. From what we understand this is a best case scenario, which means that problems may still push AMD’s 32nm processors back to 2011.

It can be looked at from different angles, but AMD is a year behind Intel in terms of moving on to new nodes, which is making it harder to stand up to Intel, not impossible, but harder.
