Barcelona is the code-name for AMD’s first quad-core processor architecture, also known as K8L. The architecture will be used throughout AMD’s assortment after the launch at the beginning of next year, but the perhaps most important market to AMD will be the server market. Now that it has appeared some more product information about AMD’s Barcelona architecture it’s therefore no major surprise that it’s the Opterons we see. According to the leaked documents, which are suppose to come from AMD, Barcelona has considerably better performance at the same frequency as today’s Opteron models. Which will be a must as the first Barcelona processors will be launched at 2.5GHz at best.



Depending on what power consumption and focus you want with your processors AMD will supply several Opteron series based on the Barcelona core. We’re still waiting for a concrete launch date for Barcelona and it wouldn’t hurt with more information about the different desktop models based on the new architecture.
