AMD has now answered and confirmed why Brisbane, the new 65nm core from AMD, comes with a higher L2 cache latency than the previous 90nm models. Speculations were going around that we should be able to expect an introduction of a larger cache, which usually is the reason for increasing the latency, and this has turned out to be the case here as well, according to information TechReport has posted. The performance gap between the 65nm and 90nm models was far from staggering, but clearly noticeable in several benchmarks. This together with the fact that earlier known roadmaps had not revealed any plans for a bigger L2 cache for the desktop processors caused some confusion and points to that this was a late decision. Anyhow, it seems that we will see new models with larger cache in later revisions.
