Intel’s greatest trumps with its Atom platform are the power consumption and the price. Now that we close in on the next generation Atom platform, Pine Trail-D, it is precisely these two things that Intel has improved. The new Pineview-based Atom processors will house an integrated memory controller and graphics circuit so the only thing the Tiger Point chipset house is some I/O functions. This will reduce the overall size of the circuit board by 70% while the power consumption will be cut in half.

This will also make the platform considerably cheaper, while it will enable fanless cooling solutions with these cooler chips. Most likely the battery times will improve significantly as well. The performance is still up for discussion, but we at least hope for a tweaked graphics circuit and a processor that can make good use of the DDR2-800 memory support.
